History of the Bible in English

The impact of the Bible throughout history is difficult to overstate. More manuscripts remain extant from antiquity than any other piece of literature. It was the first book in print and, at around 5 billion copies, the most sold and distributed book in existence. Some old Bibles have been extensively illustrated with the finest works of art, while others have been quite plain. Some have been very expensive; others affordable or even free. When the Bible was first printed and widely distributed it served as a catalyst for increased literacy throughout the Western world.

History of the Geneva Bible

After completing the New Testament, Whittingham spearheaded work on the Old Testament. He enlisted the help of Miles Coverdale, Anthony Gilbey, Christopher Goodman, Thomas Sampson, and William Cole. They worked directly from the Hebrew text producing the first Old Testament that did not depend on the Vulgate. For the first time, the Bible was divided into chapters with verses, packed with notes and commentary, and filled with helpful cross-references. The Geneva Bible stood apart as essentially the first ever Study Bible.

History of the King James Bible

When the King James Bible was finally completed in 1611, it was printed in an attractive folio size with Gothic font in two columns. As the title page states, this large Bible was ‘appointed to be read in churches.’ Filled with elegant prose and known for its majestic style, it would have an enormous impact on future generations. Described as one of the most important books in English, it bolstered the English-speaking world and contributed to English literacy for countless years.
